Pat Thomas

Pat Thomas began performing music at age eight. He researched traditional music and reggae was an early on curiosity. Thomas was influenced to consider up jazz after viewing famous pianist Oscar Peterson on tv. By 1979, Thomas was carrying out significantly as an improviser. His experimental leanings manifested themselves by means of consumer electronics — he takes on and programs digital keyboards and uses pre-recorded tapes in his music. In 1986, he joined up with Ghosts, a music group that also included flutist/saxophonist Pete McPhail and percussionist Matt Lewis. In 1988, Thomas’ fascination with digital music was compensated with a percentage to create two fresh compositions for his personal ten-piece electro-acoustic outfit, Monads; the group included vocalist Phil Minton, violinist Phil Durrant, bassist Marcio Matttos, and trumpeter Jon Corbett. Thomas was asked to take part in guitarist Derek Bailey’s Business Week (an annual group of concerts offering different combos of improvisers) in 1990 and 1991. He’s performed in drummer Tony Oxley’s quartet and Special event Orchestra, and with soprano saxophonist Lol Coxhill in a number of combinations. Other random collaborators possess included Steve Beresford, Thurston Moore, and Eugene Chadbourne. In 1992, Thomas produced the quartet Scatter with Minton, Roger Turner, and Dave Tucker; the music group toured the U.K. in 1993 and 1997. Thomas can be an associate — with drummer Joe Gallivan and electrical guitarist Gary Smith — of Powerfield, a power trio that’s documented for Gallivan’s newjazz.com label. Thomas provides recorded for many independent jazz brands in European countries, including Incus, Leo, Intakt, and Acta. In 2001, Emanem released 3 Pianos, by Thomas and fellow pianists Beresford and Veryan Weston.
