Ozzie Cadena

Being a longtime personnel manufacturer for Savoy Information, Ozzie Cadena guided the fledgling professions of potential jazz immortals including McCoy Tyner, Cal Tjader, Costs Evans, Donald Byrd, and Cannonball Adderley. Delivered Sept 26, 1924, in Oklahoma Town, Cadena grew up in Newark, NJ — as a kid he shined sneakers to fund every week pilgrimages to Harlem, where he soaked in the neighborhood music, and as time passes he even started participating in African-American churches to see their gospel choirs firsthand. After offering using the U.S. Marines in Globe Battle II, Cadena resolved in NEW YORK in 1945, learning bass and piano ahead of landing his very own jazz radio present in Newark. In 1951 he became a member of the personnel of Herman Lubinsky’s Savoy Information as a manufacturer and A&R mind, and during his tenure using the label, it surfaced among the leading imprints in jazz. Furthermore to producing classes offering then-unknowns like Tyner and Tjader, Cadena helmed Savoy times headlined by performers including Milt Jackson, Artwork Pepper, the present day Jazz Quartet, and Charles Mingus — he spent over eight years using the label in every, during that period also overseeing Savoy’s change into gospel via recordings spotlighting Wayne Cleveland and Clara Ward. Upon exiting Savoy, Cadena offered with Prestige, Blue Notice, and Fantasy, creating a series of traditional soul-jazz times headlined by Sonny Stitt, Shirley Scott, and Kenny Burrell. In 1974 Cadena and his family members relocated to Hermosa Seaside, CA, where he opened up his personal record store and in addition assumed booking responsibilities for the famed jazz golf club the Lighthouse Café. Furthermore, his child Dez earned rock and roll & move immortality as an associate from the pioneering SoCal hardcore music group Black Flag, accompanied by a protracted stint having a latter-day incarnation from the Misfits.
