Overpass grew from the California punk music group Slovenly, which recorded for the seminal SST label within the 1980s. When Slovenly documented its last recording in 1992, three people — guitarist and vocalist Tom Watson, bassist Scott Ziegler, and ex-Saccharine Trust drummer Rob Holzman — made a decision to attempt a far more cohesive, interactive method of composing music as an organization. The group’s self-titled debut premiered on SST subsidiary New Alliance, having a follow-up, Manhattan (Seaside), finished in 1994.
