Montreal quartet Ought began in 2011, taking weighty cues using their city’s thriving picture of underground politics, loft celebrations, and D.We.Y. culture. Created by vocalist/guitarist Tim Darcy (referred to as Tim Beeler until acquiring his mother’s maiden name in 2015), bassist Ben Stidworthy, keyboardist Matt Might, and drummer/violinist Tim Eager, the music group melded unlikely affects from both high-energy middle-’90s emo rings and airy, early university rock acts just like the Feelies and Speaking Minds. The bandmembers all resided together within a distributed house/practice space, self-recording their initial EP, New Quiet, in 2012. They performed often in Montreal, ultimately catching the hearing of indie label Constellation, which released their debut full-length record, More Than ANY Time, in the springtime of 2014. They came back using a four-track EP, ONCE AGAIN with Sense, released in Oct from the same season. The group’s second record, Sun DECREASING, appeared in Sept of 2015. Darcy released a single album of even more personal materials in early 2017, with a number of the music predating Ought.
