The person behind pop/punk superstar group Osaka Popstar, singer John Cafiero, started the band in an effort to unite his love of music and cartoons, not forgetting the fact it gave him the chance to try out with a few of punk rock’s (and his) heroes. With Marky Ramone (from the Ramones) and Richard Hell (the Voidoids) on drums, Jerry Just (the Misfits) on bass, and Dez Cadena (Dark Flag) and Ivan Julian (Richard Hell & the Voidoids) on guitars, Osaka Popstar released their debut recording, fittingly entitled Osaka Popstar as well as the American Legends of Punk, in 2006. Cafiero also worked well carefully with cartoonists and animators John Pound, Mari-chan, and Joel Veitch in developing the recording art and both music video clips included on the record.
