Norma Winstone

Norma Winstone includes a lissome voice, agile and expressive, and she’s an excellent improviser aswell. That’s not to state she’s a vocal athlete, nevertheless; although she’s known on her behalf wordless improvisations, Winstone is normally an excellent interpreter of lyrics and constructed melody — a plain-speaking, rhythmically immediate singer who reaches the guts of the problem quickly and successfully. Winstone performed piano and body organ in her youngsters. She began performing semi-professionally by age 17, inspired by typical jazz vocalists. Through the ’60s she became drawn to the jazz avant-garde. She performed in groupings led by pianists Michael Garrick and Mike Westbrook; she also sang with such forward-thinking music artists as saxophonist John Surman, flügelhornist Kenny Wheeler, composer Michael Gibbs, and pianist John Taylor (whom she wedded in 1972). In 1992 she collaborated with composer/arranger Steve Grey within the creation of “A French Folk Melody Suite,” commissioned and performed with the North German Radio big music group. She actually is also an associate of Wheeler’s big music group. In July 2002 she was honored the title Greatest Vocalist on the BBC Jazz Honours at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. That same calendar year, she released the record Chamber Music with pianist Glauco Venier. Winstone following came back in 2006 with Amoroso… Just More So offering the Stan Tracey trio. Winstone after that paired for just two even more albums with Venier, including 2007’s Ranges and 2009’s Tales Yet to inform. In 2013 Winstone shipped the recording Mirrors with longtime collaborator Wheeler. The trio recording Dance Without Response, featuring Venier, made an appearance on ECM in 2014.
