Noise

The duo Noise arose in the same circle of underground musicians across the Small performance space in Tokyo that gave delivery to Fushitsusha, High Rise, Gaseneta, Kosokuya, and less well-known Japanese groups exploring the tangents between avant-garde rock and improvisation. Sound was actually somewhat less loud than many of these various other groupings, though certainly just like experimental using their no-wave strategy. The group was produced by Reiko Omaru in 1979, and after several lineup adjustments and flirting with a far more punk style, resolved right down to the duo of Tori Kudo on drums and body organ, and Omaru on vocals, electric guitar, and trumpet, and composing every one of the music, aswell. The set performed several concert events at several Tokyo locations in past due 1979 and 1980. Their music was dark and minimalist, with Kudo’s lengthy, droning body organ chords and ritualistic drumbeats blended with Omaru’s delicate but disjointed vocals, atonal electric guitar snarls, and bleats of distorted trumpet. Their music stocks the minimalist visual of early Velvet Underground or Suicide, but will take it even more. Sound also documented the record Tenno, which record premiered in 1980 over the label of the well-known bootlegger who vanished immediately after, departing the group floundering and with debt. The uncommon record quickly became a high-priced collectable among record fans. Sound continued on / off until 1982, occasionally being a duo, but by past due 1982 Omaru was executing under the Sound moniker single. Omaru and Kudo wedded each other immediately after that. Tori Kudo continued to play in a number of groups, aswell as to type Men & Dolls in the first ’80s and Mahir Shalal Hash Baz a couple of years later. Sound head Reiko Omaru sometimes performed in Mahir Shalal Hash Baz, but nothing at all was noticed of her very own projects before release of the solo effort Fireplace Inside My Hat. The Sound LP Tenno was ultimately reissued correctly on Compact disc by Pataphysique Information in 1997 with some reward live material.
