Nikita Magaloff

Biography

Nikita Magaloff was one of the most interesting and charismatic key pad figures from the twentieth hundred years. A lot of his recordings remain obtainable and in contemporary sound; yet right here was a guy who was a pal of Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, from whom he required structure lessons, and Ravel, who was simply a keen admirer. Magaloff concertized with essential conductors and orchestras of your day and at most exclusive celebrations. He also collaborated with the best string players, like violinist Joseph Szigeti. Though Magaloff was created in Russia, he was cosmopolitan in perspective, with a wide repertory that preferred Chopin: he performed many all-Chopin concerts and experienced the distinction to be the very first pianist to record most of Chopin’s piano music. But his repertory also included Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Brahms, Schumann, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Scriabin, and several others. A lot of Magaloff’s recordings can be found on Philips and Decca. Magaloff was created in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Feb 8 (January 26, Julian, or traditional style), 1912. His family members fled the Trend when he was six, touring 1st to Finland, after that to america, and lastly settling in Paris in 1922. Magaloff’s 1st advanced studies had been in the Paris Conservatory, where his main instructor was Isidor Philipp. It had been within the 1920s in Paris that Magaloff fulfilled Prokofiev, Ravel, and Rachmaninov, composers whose music and impact thought prominently in his profession. He also befriended Szigeti there, a guy he acknowledged with presenting him to a wide selection of chamber music and whose girl he would afterwards marry. While through the 1920s with the 1950s Magaloff was mixed up in concert hall and documenting studio, his profession seemed to consider wing after 1960. This lift may have been because of the cessation of his teaching actions: from 1949 to 1959 he frequently held get good at classes on the Geneva Conservatory. But perhaps section of Magaloff’s past due achievement owed something towards the alter in his design: he got more chances, shown greater interest, and played, probably, with more nature. The majority of Magaloff’s obtainable recordings were produced after 1960. He continued to be busy through the entire last three years of his profession, hardly slowing even close to the end: within the 1990-1991 period, he provided a six-concert series that protected nearly the entire Chopin result. He passed away in Vevey, Switzerland, of tumor on Dec 26, 1992.
