Mungolian Jet Set

Spouting a cryptically convoluted cosmology that’s just as daffy and inscrutable as their genre-defying prog-disco concoctions, Norway’s Mungolian Plane Set pull their aesthetic cues from extraterrestrials, shamanic mysticism, and medieval Eurasian warlords, and their musical ones from left-field jazz, schlock exotica, cheesy ambient trance, Balearic electronica, and factors beyond. Fundamentally the warped brainchild of Pål “Strangefruit” Nyhus, a DJ and turntablist who was simply mixed up in Norwegian jazz and experimental music picture through the ’90s and early 2000s, and digital manufacturer Knut Sævik, the music group started out being a loose techno-jazz fusion collective before morphing right into a fairly stable electronic creation duo. Commissioned by Jazzland labelhead Bugge Wesseltoft to spearhead a task motivated by electric-period Mls Davis, it had taken Nyhus, working with Sævik and a bunch of Oslo avant-garde instrumentalists, many years to provide 2006’s Beauty Found Us in Rock, an esoteric, collaborative “potential jazz” opus that integrated elements of golf club music plus some from the fantastical conceptualism that could arrive to demarcate the Mungolian ethos. Their remixes, which typically extended much beyond the six-minute tag, frequently amounted to low cost reinventions if not really essentially brand-new multi-part compositions, loosely constructed around their resource materials but adding complexly split percussion-heavy grooves, fresh vocals (generally supplied by Nyhus himself), and a wildly unstable range of interpolated musical suggestions pilfered from almost any resource imaginable. Their special, cartoonishly extreme, but engagingly inventive remixing design — and their association using the burgeoning Norwegian “cosmic disco” picture — gained them an extremely prominent profile inside the worldwide electronica community, culminating in 2009’s We Gave It Away All Away, Right now We Are Acquiring It Back again, an epic double-album arranged released on Smalltown Supersound that put together the cream of their remix function plus a handful of unique songs. A lighter, even more pop-focused full-length known as Schlungs adopted in 2011. Mungodelics, another recording that included remixes aswell as unique material, premiered in 2012 and presented looks from Jaga Jazzist and Unni Wilhelmsen. While carrying on to focus on their following full-length, Mungolian Aircraft Set released a four-song EP entitled A Town So Easy in 2016.
