Japanese experimental group Mono came together in 2000, choosing to forgo vocals and concentrate instead in atmospheric, classical-inspired rock music. The foursome, bassist Tamaki (the lone feminine in the group), drummer Yasunori Takada, and guitarists Takaakira “Taka” Goto and Yoda, released their initial full-length record, Beneath the Pipal Tree, in 2001 on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. In 2003, after switching to World Rock Recording Firm, Mono released One Step Even more and You Die, a remix edition of which was released the following calendar year as NY Soundtracks. That same calendar year their fourth record, Strolling Cloud and Deep Crimson Sky, Flag Fluttered and sunlight Shined, documented in Chicago with manufacturer Steve Albini, premiered on Temporary Home. Albini also performed the same responsibilities on Mono’s Apr 2006 record, You IS THERE, and in Sept the music group released Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain, a combination between traditional and rock and roll that also presented a cooperation with World’s End Sweetheart, amongst others. The desire for classical preparations, strings, and atmospheres became a fundamental element of the band’s sound.
