Monarco

Monarco is an associate of the original Velha Guarda da Portela, an organization using the venerable composers from the Portela samba college. His sambas have already been recorded with achievement by Martinho da Vila (“Tudo Menos Amor” with Walter Rosa), Paulinho da Viola (“Passado de Glória” and “O Lenço”), Roberto Ribeiro (“Proposta Amorosa”), Beth Carvalho (“Fim de Sofrimento”), João Nogueira, Maria Creuza, Zeca Pagodinho (whose initial strike was “Coração em Desalinho,” also documenting “Vai Vadiar”), and Clara Nunes (“Rancho da Primavera,” “Vai Amor,” with Walter Rosa), amongst others. Tudo Azul, made by Marisa Monte in 1999 using the Velha Guarda da Portela, Paulinho da Viola, and Zeca Pagodinho, features his function. Since his years as a child, he is a friend of Paulo da Portela’s and a normal on the rodas de samba; he had written his initial sambas throughout that period. In 1950, he joined up with Portela’s ala dos compositores (composers’ section) and in addition became the institutions diretor de harmonia (perhaps one of the most essential functions within the samba college, coordinates the entry of the various sections within the parade) afterwards. His first documented structure was “Vida de Rainha” (with Alvaiade), by Risadinha in 1975. His initial solo record as an interpreter premiered in 1976 (Monarco Continental). His initial CD premiered in 1991 (Monarco, a Voz perform Samba) in Japan. His albums are also released in European countries as well as the U.S. A Voz perform Samba (Kuarup) brought him a Clear prize as Greatest Samba Singer.
