Mike Pyne

b. 2 Sept 1940, Thornton-le-Dale, Yorkshire, Britain, d. 24 Might 1995, London, Britain. Pyne’s dad was a pianist and he motivated him to try out from age three. He visited London in 1961 and performed piano regularly inside a succession of rings – with drummer Tony Kinsey, Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, Tubby Hayes and Humphrey Lyttelton. Pyne occasionally had the opportunity to play his second device, the trumpet, but more frequently contributed his solid single lines or accompaniments on piano. He caused Philly Joe Jones, saxophonists Stan Getz, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Dexter Gordon and Ronnie Scott, using the Mike Gibbs Orchestra as well as the Cecil Payne Quintet. In the 80s he also used Georgie Popularity’s Stardust Street display and Keith Smith’s Hefty Jazz. Pyne’s sibling, Chris Pyne, was also a jazz musician and tragically, passed away just one single month before his sibling.
