Michael Zerang

A self-described “Chicago-born Assyrian percussionist,” Michael Zerang’s set of collaborators is a virtual compendium from the Windy City’s free of charge jazz/improv community, including saxophonists Fred Anderson and Ken Vandermark, cellist Fred Longberg-Holm, drummer Hamid Drake, and bassist Kent Kessler, amongst others. A few of his many overall performance vehicles have already been Liof Munimula, the Neutrino Orchestra, Frozen Lucy, the Quirt Quintet, Musica Menta, the Vandermark Quartet, Desire Parmesan cheese, the Sputter Outfit, In Zenith, and Damaged Wire. He’s documented for the Okka Disk, boxMEDIA, Kontrans, Southport, Quinnah Information, Eighth Day time Music, Garlic clove, and Platypus brands. He’s also made up for film, theatre, and dance. Zerang can be an educator; he trained overall performance technique and audio design like a visitor artist in the Artwork Institute of Chicago, and rhythmic evaluation for dancers at Northwestern University or college. He also shows music to kids. In 1985, Zerang founded the Link’s Hall Overall performance Series in Chicago, and offered as its movie director until 1989. Zerang’s playing is usually mainly coloristic; he’s much more likely to embroider an organization improvisation than travel it. He includes a light contact and a discontinuous way, even though he’s not really a viscerally fascinating player, he’s tasteful and attentive to how are you affected around him.
