The Brooklyn, NY-based feminist art/music collective Males began in 2007 like a DJ/remix task of J.D. Samson and Johanna Fateman while their music group Le Tigre was on hiatus. Throughout that period, Samson also started working on tracks with her task Hirsute, which presented Ginger Brooks Takahashi of LTTR as well as the Ballet as well as the Ladybug Transistor’s Michael O’Neill. Ultimately, Takahashi and O’Neill became primary members of Males along with Samson, while Fateman and article writer Emily Roysdon became consultants. The music group’s sound progressed right into a sharp-edged fusion of dance-punk and electro-pop, while their lyrics indicated the wishes and difficulties of feminists as well as the LGBT community. Males released several singles over time, including Off Our Backs and Credit Cards Infants, and toured with Peaches as well as the Gossip before IAMSOUND released their debut recording, DISCUSS Body, in 2011.
