Melvin Sparks

Although not an enormous name in jazz, Melvin Sparks brought his Offer Green-influenced electric guitar to a number of soul-jazz and organ combo recordings from the later ’60s and early ’70s. A fan of jazz in addition to R&B and blues, the Houston indigenous took up your guitar at 11, and was just 13 when he sat along with B.B. Ruler. In 1963 he became a member of the Upsetters, an R&B present band that supported Small Richard, Sam Cooke, as well as other big brands. After departing the Upsetters, Sparks used Jack port McDuff in 1966-1967. The improviser was quite definitely popular in the past due ’60s and early ’70s, and he was highlighted on periods by Charles Earland, Sonny Stitt, Lou Donaldson, Rusty Bryant, Sonny Phillips, Reuben Wilson, and Johnny “Hammond” Smith, amongst others. Sparks shipped his first record as head, Sparks!, for Prestige in 1970, and documented some more Prestige schedules before offering Melvin Sparks for Westbound in 1975. When soul-jazz’s fortunes dropped in the middle-’70s, the guitarist wasn’t functioning as much. The only real album Sparks documented being a head within the ’80s was 1981’s Gleaming on Muse, although he was highlighted being a sideman on periods by Houston Person, Hank Crawford, and Jimmy McGriff throughout that 10 years. The 1990s noticed a whole lot of restored curiosity about soul-jazz, and in 1997 Sparks came back to the studio room for his Cannonball time I’m a Gittar Participant. Although he continuing to execute, Sparks didn’t return like a innovator until 2002’s EVERYTHING YOU Hear Is EVERYTHING YOU Get. Then adopted up with 2004’s IT REALLY IS What IT REALLY IS, 2005’s THAT IS It!, and 2006’s Groove on Up, all on Savant Information. Sparks passed away on March 15, 2011 at his house in Mt. Vernon, NY, of problems from diabetes and eventually heart failing. He was 64 yrs . old.
