Mello Cads

Mello Cads were formed in LA, CA, by late-night radio-show sponsor, concert promoter, and record-label exec David Ponak. Ponak experienced long wanted to front side his own smooth rock-lounge group, portraying himself like a jet-setting playboy cad; and quickly had done that, encircling himself having a talented group offering local pop music artists including keyboardist Brian Kassan (the Wondermints, Chewy Marble), bassist Scott “the Tycoon of Teenager” Halper (the Right now People, Maple Mars, Monogroove), drummer Howard Greene, and multi-instrumentalist Probyn Gregory (the Wondermints, Brian Wilson). Ponak was quickly arranging Mello Cad displays where he and his group, putting on coordinating tuxedos and flanked by mini-skirted go-go ladies, would perform cover tunes by soft rock and roll songwriters like Jimmy Webb, Paul Williams, and Burt Bacharach. As their recognition grew, Mello Cads quickly began contributing songs to various designer compilations. Ponak ultimately fulfilled Kevin Dotson — known expertly mainly because Linus of Hollywood — who was simply entranced by Ponak’s kitschy stage shows and authorized Mello Cads to his personal Franklin Castle Recordings label. Then began generating their debut recording, Soft like a Rock and roll, that was released in-may 2002. The idea album presented spoken term interludes, and sublime smooth rock and roll support from Ponak’s fresh batch of Cads: Linus of Hollywood on bass, Probyn Gregory on acoustic guitar and trumpet, Nelson Bragg (the Negro Issue, the Right now People) on drums, and Bob Remstein on keyboards. Soft like a Rock and roll is highlighted by way of a visitor appearance by Paul Williams, whom Ponak acquired met and be close friends with after arranging a tribute concert towards the songwriter/professional in 1998.
