Matty Matlock

An excellent clarinetist, Matty Matlock also gained a whole lot of work in the 1950s as an arranger for Dixieland-flavored periods. He began playing clarinet when he was 12 and performed in a number of little-known rings, including one led by Jimmy Pleasure. He was with Ben Pollack’s group during 1929-1934 so when the orchestra became Bob Crosby’s, Matlock remained on. He became active as an arranger, but continuing using Crosby on / off until 1942. At that time, he shifted to LA and worked within the studios. Matlock caused Crimson Nichols and Pollack once again and participated within the music for the film and the tv screen series Pete Kelly’s Blues. Matty Matlock led the Rampart Road Paraders in the 1950s, got many reunions with Bob Crosby and continuing playing in to the middle-’70s. Sadly, his recordings like a innovator for the X, Columbia, Tops, and Warner Bros. brands during 1954-1960 are long from print.
