After doing four albums as half of the indie pop duo Butterglory within the ’90s, Matt Suggs produced an extraordinary solo debut with Golden Times Before They Result in 2000. Suggs’ wry, laconic delivery is fairly similar to that of the Kinks’ Ray Davies, as are his melodic and quirky music. He’s not really a total Davies knockoff, though, with an increase of of the American roots experience to his function, and a even more oblique lyricism which makes clever usage of spooky pictures and transforms of phrase.
