Mara!

This Australian band was formerly referred to as Tensey’s Fancy. Mara Kiek (vocals, tapan, darrabukka, tambourine), Wayne Llewelyn Kiek (bouzouki, acoustic guitar, bass), Jim Denly (flute, alto-saxophone, darrabukka, denleyphone), Mike Haughton (recorder, tenor, soprano saxophone, vocals) and Paul Miller documented this device’s sole launch, a self-titled recording released in 1984. After recruiting Danny Thompson (b. 4 Apr 1939, Teignmouth, Devon, Britain; double bass) instead of Miller, they released two acclaimed albums as Mara!, implementing a highly initial style encompassing a complete selection of musical affects, including tunes and music from France, Persia, Greece and Macedonia. Whether carrying out the 15th-century ballad ‘Riturnella’ or a far more contemporary track, Mara! successfully shown a clever relationship of Western european music and jazz affects. Steve Elphick changed Thompson on following releases.
