Makgona Tsohle Band

A session strap for South African mbqanga vocalists shaped in 1963, the Makgona Tsohle strap found prominence within the 70s support the peerless township single vocalist Simon Nkabinde Mahlathini alongside the choral group the Mahotella Queens. Makgona Tsohle also documented a small number of their own-name ‘sax-jive’ strikes in the past due 70s and early 80s, that have been later collected for the recording Mathaka Vol 1 (1983). Among many talented music artists the group used was the guitarist, composer and maker Marks Mankwane (d. Oct 1998), Western Nkosi (d. Oct 1998; saxophone), Joseph Makwela (bass), Lucky Monama (drums) and Vivian Ngubane (acoustic guitar). The group disbanded following a fatalities of Mankwane and Nkosi in Oct 1998.
