Upon the 1991 dissolution from the British trance-rock quartet Loop, bassist Neil McKay and John Wills formed the Hair and Skin Trading Company, leaving guitarists Robert Hampson and Scott Dawson to found the highly experimental Main, a task combining the aesthetics of ambient music with layered tapestries of droning guitar textures and dark, ominous soundscapes. Main’s debut EP produces, 1991’s Hydra and 1992’s Quiet — later gathered because the Hydra-Calm LP — had been their most intense, along with the closest to regular rock idioms; you start with 1992’s stellar Dry out Rock Feed, the duo started exploring ambient noises, gradually getting rid of all traces of percussion and tempo from their function. With 1993’s Firmament as well as the triple-LP established Motion Pool, Primary began pressing into “drumless space,” a world of cool, alien audio with small resemblance to typical musical framework; 1994’s Firmament II severed all staying ties to custom, focusing rather on two epic, abstract environmental parts without earthly precedent or connection. In 2006 Hampson announced he’d be retiring the primary name to spotlight his single function, feeling burdened by followers and critics associating his use a guitar, an instrument he previously grown sick and tired of long before. There is an interval of dormancy, but by 2010 Hampson was deep into focus on many single albums and by Oct of the entire year announced he’d be re-instating Primary once again. He was became a member of this time around by composer Stephan Mathieu and both worked collectively on 2013’s Ablation for Editions Mego, the very first full-length Main recording since 2006.
