Upon the 1991 dissolution from the British trance-rock quartet Loop, bassist Neil McKay and John Wills formed the Hair and Skin Trading Company, leaving guitarists Robert Hampson and Scott Dawson to found the highly experimental Main, a task combining the aesthetics of ambient music with layered tapestries of droning guitar textures and dark, ominous soundscapes. Main’s debut EP produces, 1991’s Hydra and 1992’s Quiet — later gathered because the Hydra-Calm LP — had been their most intense, along with the closest to regular rock idioms; you start with 1992’s stellar Dry out Rock Feed, the duo started exploring ambient noises, gradually getting rid of all traces of percussion and tempo from their function.
