Maceo Pinkard

The songwriter who produced “Special Georgia Dark brown” a favorite standard for many years following its composition, Maceo Pinkard was created in Bluefield, WV, in 1897. He graduated in the Bluefield Shaded Institute in 1914 and composed his first main melody (“I’m Goin’ BACK”) twelve months afterwards. Introduced by Ben Bernie & His Orchestra immediately after it was constructed in 1925, “Special Georgia Dark brown” — compiled by Pinkard, Bernie, and Ken Casey — even so became most widely used following the Harlem Globetrotters golf ball team began deploying it as an anthem. Among Pinkard’s various other compositions had been “Glucose, That Glucose Baby of Mine” and “Them There Eye,” the last mentioned presented in 1930 by Gus Arnheim, but most widely used via an association with Billie Vacation ten years afterwards. Maceo Pinkard passed away in 1962.
