Lulu & the Lampshades

London-based close friends Luisa Gerstein and Heloise Tunstall-Behrens conceived the thought of pop-folk outfit Lulu & the Lampshades throughout their time at Bristol University in ’09 2009. Gerstein originally made a MySpace web page to program her need to be component of a music group, aptly called Helouisa — an assortment of both their brands — as well as the group begun to consider form. After parting methods using a string of man guitarists, Jemma was set up on electric guitar alongside drummer/percussionist Dan who finished the lineup. Borrowing components from a variety of affects, from calypso beats to traditional folk melodies, the group’s stand-out harmonies bring their sweet folk music through twisting tempos and interesting buildings. Led by Gerstein and supported by Behrens, the vocals encompass designs off their friend Peggy Sue’s brooding vocal design, and a soulful, textured support vocals that sometimes features the complete music group. The foursome continued to release one “Feet towards the Sky” on U.K. indie label Voga Parochia on a restricted 7″ operate of 200 copies which eventually sold-out. Their concert events garnered much curiosity, specifically as the “Lampshades” — two close friends dressed up as lampshades dance on either aspect from the stage — would arrive and enhance the playful eccentricity from the outfit. Using a penchant for composing songs on bicycles, their similarly innovative and unconventional design of assorted equipment contains ukulele, glockenspiel, trumpet, violin, and skiffle-style percussion produced of scrapyard steel, pots, and pans. The initial rhythm section is certainly epitomized by their D.We.Y. YouTube strike video for “Mugs,” and was motivated with a percussion course routine and combined very easily with gospel designed contact and response vocals. Indie label Moshi Moshi agreed upon them this year 2010 and released the “COOL WATER” 7″ within their singles golf club in 2011, with “Mugs” within the B-side.
