Louis Metcalf

Biography

Louis Metcalf appeared to be all around the 1920s, but was largely forgotten after the Despair hit, in spite of remaining active in to the late ’60s. He used Charlie Creath in St. Louis in the first ’20s, shifted to NY, backed a number of traditional blues performers, and caused Willie “the Lion” Smith, Sidney Bechet, Elmer Snowden, Charlie Johnson, and Sam Wooding. His most significant association was with Duke Ellington, documenting with him in 1926 and being truly a regular person in his orchestra during 1927-1928. Metcalf’s single design was a comparison towards the wah-wah playing of Bubber Miley. He also used Jelly Move Morton, Ruler Oliver, and Luis Russell, and documented with Bessie Smith in 1931. But from then on, he stopped documenting, leading a music group in Montreal and employed in the Midwest. Metcalf was back New York for a couple years in the past due ’30s and spent 1946-1952 leading the International Music group in Montreal. He documented obscure sides being a head for Franwill (1954-1955), Stereo-O-Craft (1958), and Pickwick (1963); a fantastic record for Spivey (1966) discovers the trumpeter to have already been inspired by bop and playing within a amazingly modern design. But Louis Metcalf will be best-remembered for his brief stint with Duke Ellington 40 years previously.
