An experimental noise-punk music group using a disarming acoustic aspect, Small Claw began in Detroit in 2003, when Kilynn Lunsford and Heath Heemsbergen began singing and using their acoustic guitars throughout that summertime’s Eastern Seaboard blackout. After recruiting the Piranhas’ Jamie Easter on drums, the trio started playing live and documenting, gigging with rings like the Bizarros and producing their first record, 2005’s Moss Provides Fangs, along with his Name is certainly Alive’s Warn Defever. Hendrik Deherder had taken over drums responsibility in 2006, with time to record Spit and Squalor Swallow the Snow using the music group in Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry)’s living area; the album premiered being a limited-edition vinyl fabric LP by Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Tranquility! imprint. After launching a split one with Michael Yonkers, Small Claw transferred to Portland, OR in 2007 and added Adam Svenson on drums, shifting Deherder to keyboards and percussion; Tyvek’s Damon Sturdivant also became a member of the group as an auxiliary member, adding extra percussion and synth to concert events and recording periods. Another one on Physical Sewer Information preceded Small Claw’s third record, Human Flavor, which made an appearance on Ecstatic Tranquility! in ’09 2009. The Competition to underneath one was also released that season via Siltbreeze.
