Chicago acid jazz outfit Water Spirit originally comprised saxophonist/musical director Mars Williams, DJ Jesse de la Peña, guitarist Tommy Klein, bassist Ricky Showalter, trumpeter Ron Haynes, keyboardist Frankie Hill, and drummer Dan Leali; shaped in 1993, the group quickly surfaced like a Windy Town club favorite because of their regular Weekend night gigs in the Elbo Space, and soon documented a self-titled debut LP for his or her own Spirit What label. Some high-profile gigs including looks at President Expenses Clinton’s inaugural parade in Washington, D.C., in addition to basketball celebrity Dennis Rodman’s party significantly boosted Water Soul’s presence, and in 1996 their recording was reissued within the Ark 21 label; shifting their regular Weekend gigs to Chicago’s Twice Door, the group — right now offering Williams, Showalter, Haynes, Hill, and Leali furthermore to fresh recruits including DJ Ajax, rapper the Dirty MF, guitarist Tommy Sanchez, trombonist John Janowiak, percussionist Newt Cole, and vocalist Simone (the girl of the fantastic Nina Simone) — released their sophomore record, Make Some Sound, in 1998.
