Through the punk rock and roll era from the late ’70s, there have been three bands composed of women who produced among the better, most adventurous, most exhilarating, & most critically derided music of that time period. Two had been the English rings the Slits as well as the Raincoats, and the 3rd music group, from Switzerland, was LiLiPUT. Supporters of most three rings will argue advertisement infinitum concerning who was simply the better. But a very important factor is for several: LiLiPUT was an incredible music group that documented amazing music, and evaluating what they achieved compared to that of another music group is a worthless intellectual workout. Besides, it detracts from beneficial listening time. Produced in Zurich in 1978 by guitarist Marlene Marder and bassist/vocalist Klaudia Schiff, they started using the name Kleenex before risk of a lawsuit by commercial large Kimberly-Clark (who acquired copyrighted the name Kleenex) compelled them to be LiLiPUT in 1980. Documenting for the fantastic British indie label Tough Trade, the then-Kleenex created jumpy, intense, clamorous punk-noise that highlighted Marder’s scratchy, semi-melodic electric guitar and Schiff’s yelping vocals. Not really punk rock and roll in the fast, noisy, economical feeling, LiLiPUT had been forging a different sort of punk, one which was gleefully anarchic, avant-garde, unrestrained, and suffused using a giddy, nearly palpable feeling of joy. Hearing this music, one has got the feeling that there is a near-rapturous pleasure that proceeded to go into these recordings. Their tenure at Rough Trade was brief, as was their desire for exploring career choices beyond European countries. By 1982, if they released their 1st LP, they appeared perfectly happy staying in Switzerland, operating the music group within numerous other creative projects (painting, composing, etc.) they pursued. By the finish of 1983, LiLiPUT experienced disbanded, as well as the music that they had documented quickly achieved famous, but mainly unheard, position. For the music group, they appeared destined to become relegated towards the position of feminist-inspired punk rock and roll footnote. All this transformed in 1993, when the Swiss label Off Program released a double-disc, 46-monitor compilation of the complete documented result of Kleenex/LiLiPUT. The effect was among the great reissues from the 10 years. Unfortunately, it went of print soon after its launch, but Kill Rock and roll Celebrities released it once again in early 2001, rendering it even more available than before. The exuberance and pleasure of LiLiPUT’s breathtaking music could possibly be enjoyed once more, and a music group that was nearly forgotten came back with a few of the most artful, modern, truly choice music to become documented beneath the genre identifier of punk rock and roll. Also, followers of riot grrrl rock and roll take notice: this is a tremendously important music group. Although they eschewed severe confrontation, there’s a powerful feeling of personal that imbues this music and lit just how for a fresh generation of feminine musicians.
