Leonard Hochman

Considering how okay Leonard Hochman performs on his 1994 Brownstone CD Until Tomorrow (sounding a little like Zoot Sims on tenor and exhibiting a warm build on bass clarinet), it really is surprising that was his first record being a leader, which he previously largely ended playing back 1963! Blessed in Philadelphia, Hochman resided for an interval in NEW YORK and was raised in Richmond, Virginia. He began playing tenor when he was 11. He freelanced from enough time he was 15 until he transformed 24, playing in a multitude of settings including 2 yrs in the Catskills. Among the music artists who he performed with had been Kai Winding, Al Haig, Phil Woods, Kenny Clarke, Brew Moore, Charlie Barnet and Herbie Mann. In 1957 Hochman transferred to Boston and spent six years being a studio room musician. He documented with Phil Wilson in the first 1960’s but was still little-known when he ceased playing in 1963. Hochman worked well at a music group instrument rental business, eventually bought the business enterprise and became an effective businessman. After offering the business, he started to play once again in the first 1990’s and his improvising skills and tone got actually improved over time. He was a significant finding when he documented Until Tomorrow although he had been 61. Among his close friends on his long-overdue debut are guitarist Mitch Seidman, Harvie Swartz as well as the past due Alan Dawson. He produced a follow-up arranged, Manhattan Morning hours in 1995 having a quintet that included Swartz and Kenny Barron.
