Legends of Jazz

Created and led by drummer Barry Martyn, this New Orleans jazz strap featured a number of historic players on periodic tours and recordings. The name of the 1978 display (1000 Many years of Jazz) had not been a lot of an exaggeration. With trumpeter Andrew Blakeney, trombonist Louis Nelson, clarinetist Joe Darensbourg, pianist Alton Purnell, bassist Ed Garland, and Martyn developing the initial sextet, the Legends documented two albums for the Crescent Jazz label during 1973-1974; the relative youngster Barney Bigard was a guest on the next date. The staff in long term years included trombonist Clyde Bernhardt and bassist Chester Zardis, alongside lesser-known players, as well as the erratic but spirited group experienced successful trips of SOUTH USA and Australia before fading out in the past due ’80s.
