Lee Sexton

A master from the drop-thumb banjo design (rather than too shabby at two-finger finding, either), Lee Sexton has lived his very existence close to his birthplace in Letcher State, KY. Delivered in 1927, he obtained his initial banjo, a homemade solid wood fretless model using a groundhog epidermis head, for the money when he was eight years of age (he proved helpful to apparent a field for weekly to acquire that money), and with instructions from his dad and uncles (among whom was the initial and sublime banjo participant Morgan Sexton), Sexton shortly mastered the device, as well as the fiddle, aswell. As a man he’d function all week in the mines and play music all weekend at home celebrations, bean stringings, and corn shuckings. June Appal released an LP of traditional materials, Whoa Mule, in 1988, and an extended CD edition in 2004 with yet another 40 a few minutes of music. Perhaps one of the most well known and revered folk music artists in eastern Kentucky, Sexton garnered a short picture in the 1980 film Coal Miner’s Child, where he shows up playing at a rectangular dance. In 1999 he was offered the Kentucky Governor’s Honor for Lifetime Accomplishment in the Arts.
