Biography

Venerated contemporary composer and pianist Lee Hyla was the concentrate of several awards, grants, and commissions for a number of decades. Hyla was created in Niagara Falls, NY and elevated in Greencastle, Indiana. He remaining Indiana for NY to study structure at SUNY Stony Brook with David Lewin, and continued to Boston to keep his research with Malcolm Peyton at the brand new England Conservatory. With the past due ’90s, Hyla proved helpful on the NEC as co-chairman from the structure section. He was the receiver of a Guggenheim fellowship, two NEA fellowships, the Stoeger Award, the Rome Award, and many various other high honors. He constructed functions for the Kronos Quartet with Allen Ginsberg, jazz saxophonist Tim Berne, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, as well as the London Sinfonietta, who performed a chamber orchestra function of his in 1980. Hyla was commissioned by many institutions like the Concert Artist’s Guild, Meet up with the Composer, as well as the Quintet from the Americas, for whom he constructed Amnesia Breaks, that they performed in 1990. Hyla provides two recordings with Jim Pugliese on CRI, Avant and Tzadik which released Riff and Transfiguration in 1999, delivering four compositions that period 1989-98. Recordings of Hyla’s functions may also be available on the brand new World and non-esuch labels.
