Home / Biography / Latyrx

Members from the prodigiously talented Solesides/Quannum collective, Latyrx went sorely underrecognized because of their restlessly experimental make of hip-hop. Their lone record was much too eccentric for the public, but also in underground circles, it dropped victim to poor distribution (it went of print double) and poor timing (Quannum mates DJ Darkness and Blackalicious hadn’t however secured their position with hip-hop supporters). The name Latyrx was a combined mix of its associates’ executing monikers, Lateef the reality Speaker (blessed Lateef Daumont) and Lyrics Blessed (blessed Tom Shimura). The root base of their relationship lay in the forming of the Solesides collective on the School of California-Davis. The crew’s charter associates — which also included DJ Darkness and the near future Blackalicious group — had been all involved with college student radio and distributed a progressive-minded method of hip-hop. Lateef and Lyrics Created initially documented as single artists; beneath the name Asia Created, the second option released the very first single within the Solesides label, “Send Them,” in early 1993. The first genuine Latyrx release arrived in 1996, and was in fact the B-side of Lateef’s single solitary “The Wreckoning.” For the monitor in question, also known as “Latyrx,” both MCs documented very different raps which were performed back simultaneously. In conjunction with DJ Shadow’s trippy creation, the result was mind-bending and began to build an underground hype for the duo. Even more single sides adopted that yr — Lateef lower “The Quickening (The Wreckoning, Pt. II)” with Darkness on the planks, and Lyrics Given birth to produced his personal 12″ launch, “Balcony Seaside” b/w “Burnt Pride.” Many of these single sides, plus a raft of fresh material, appeared within the duo’s debut LP, The Recording, that was released in 1997. DJ Darkness produced a complete of four paths, and Main Xcel (later on of Blackalicious) helmed two, while Lyrics Created handled the others himself. The Recording earned rave evaluations for its daring, electronic-flavored creation and the special moves of both rappers. It had been accompanied by the Muzapper’s Mixes EP, which included the boundary-pushing solitary “Woman Don’t Tek No.” Muzapper’s Remixes made an appearance in 1998, but sadly, The Recording didn’t stay static in print a lot longer; it had been reissued briefly in 1999 before disappearing once again. In the meantime, Solesides was reconfigured right into a fresh label, Quannum Tasks, as well as the collective officially transformed its name to Quannum aswell. Latyrx didn’t record very much following their short reign as an underground feeling. They guested on “8 Stage Plan,” a 1999 one with the Herbaliser, and in addition contributed brand-new material towards the Quannum Range compilation that calendar year. Meanwhile, The Record became something of the Holy Grail towards the Western world Coastline underground, with utilized copies offering for exorbitant amounts. Quannum Tasks finally reissued it in 2002, and can consider its place alongside the brand new crop of experimental hip-hop that included El-P’s Def Jux staff, Anti-Pop Consortium, and Anticon. By that point, both Lateef and Lyrics Blessed were reportedly focusing on single projects, the previous with Blackalicious’ Key Xcel.
