Larry Klein

Biography

Best known because the longtime manufacturer and bassist at the rear of wife Joni Mitchell, Larry Klein began his profession during the later ’70s being a noted jazz accompanist, especially appearing on some produces from Freddie Hubbard. He initial teamed with Mitchell to record her 1982 LP Crazy Things Operate Fast, getting her hubby that same season. He became her manufacturer using the 1985 record Dog Eat Pet, an record which also heralded the start of his exploration of synthesizers and modern programming methods. His use Mitchell also resulted in high-profile classes with Don Henley (1984’s Building an ideal Beast), Peter Gabriel (1986’s Therefore), and Robbie Robertson (his long-awaited 1987 single debut), in addition to productions for ex-Cars bassist Benjamin Orr (1986’s The Ribbons) as well as the Innocence Objective (their eponymous 1989 debut). Klein’s third record with Mitchell, Chalk Tag in a Rainfall Storm, made an appearance in 1988; Night time Ride Home adopted in 1992. Along the way of documenting 1994’s Turbulent Indigo, the couple’s relationship dissolved; Klein consequently went on to utilize Holly Cole and Mary Dark, and also added to the soundtrack from the 1996 film Elegance of My Center.
