An excellent altoist who’s a little underrated because of living in LA rather than leading that lots of periods of his own, Lanny Morgan was raised in L.A. He proved helpful (beginning in 1954) within the big rings of Charlie Barnet, Si Zenter, Terry Gibbs, and Bob Florence, offered in the armed forces (which avoided him from signing up for Stan Kenton) and spent the 1960-1965 period using Maynard Ferguson’s Orchestra. After freelancing in NY, he came back to LA in 1969. Morgan became a active studio room musician, a long lasting person in Supersax, and a trusted soloist in big rings led by Costs Berry, Bob Florence, and Costs Holman. Lanny Morgan provides led great albums for Palo Alto (1981), V.S.O.P. (1993), and Modern (1996), and he still provides few peers on “Cherokee.”
|1||Though most frequently seen playing baritone sax on the Chuck Barris shows he was in the house band for, Lanny Morgan is an accomplished alto sax player who has recorded four albums under his own name and is a former member of Maynard Ferguson's band.|
