Klaus Weiss


German drummer Klaus Weiss appeared in organizations numerous American expatriates in addition to leading his personal rings in trio, quintet, sextet, and big-band configurations from your ’60s with the ’90s. Affected by such drummers as Big Sid Catlett and Friend Rich, Weiss started playing expertly at age group 16. His 1st gigs, with an organization known as the Jazzopators, offered accompaniment tasks for trumpeter Nelson Williams and vocalist Inez Cavanaugh. Weiss also caused the Klaus Doldinger Quartet, and performed in the Blue Notice in Paris with Bud Powell, Kenny Drew, and Johnny Griffin. He led a trio from 1965, with pianist Rob Franken and bassist Rob Langereis, that used Booker Ervin, documented his 1st LP like a innovator (Greensleeves), and received the International Jazz Competition in Vienna in 1966, and would continue to win many Twen Jazz Polls aswell. During the past due ’60s, he also used the Erwin Lehn Big Music group, the Bayerischer Rundfunk Jazz Outfit, and Friedrich Gulda. Weiss documented six LPs through the early ’70s, many having a quintet or sextet including function by trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, bassist George Mraz, and pianist Walter Norris. He also led a global all-star big music group (with Slide Hampton, Plant Geller, Philip Catherine, and Don Menza, amongst others) for the live 1971 recording I Just Wish to Celebrate. Through the past due ’70s and early ’80s, Weiss worked well mostly along with his quintet, but additionally toured with Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Clifford Jordan, and Horace Parlan while producing regular quintet albums like a innovator. He documented two albums through the ’90s, like the trio outing L.A. Phoning and the Xmas recording A NOTE from Santa Klaus (using the NDR Bigband). Later on in his profession, as his considerable discography continued to develop, Weiss also started composing music for films and tv. He passed away unexpectedly, apparently of heart failing, on Dec 10, 2008 in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Germany.
