Biography

A pianist who’s not really a trendsetter but is consistently excellent, Kirk Lightsey way back when developed his personal sound inside the hard bop custom. He began playing piano when he was five, although he also performed clarinet during senior high school. Lightsey worked well in Detroit and California in the first ’60s, often associated singers. He obtained some interest in 1965 when he documented with Sonny Stitt and was on five Prestige information with Chet Baker. Nevertheless, Lightsey mostly experienced low-profile gigs until he toured with Dexter Gordon (1979-1983) and became area of the Market leaders (beginning in the past due ’80s). Kirk Lightsey offers documented with Jimmy Raney, Clifford Jordan, Woody Shaw, David Murray, and Harold Property, among others, and it has led his personal classes for Criss Mix and Sunnyside, including piano duets with Harold Danko. He released the duo recording, The Evenings of Bradleys with bassist Rufus Reid on Sunnyside in 2004.
