The Killer Shrews were a short-lived trio with an extraordinary avant-rock pedigree. Vocalist/guitarist Jon Langford led both Mekons as well as the also scrappier Three Johns. Business lead guitarist Gary Lucas have been both supervisor and bandleader for Captain Beefheart in the ultimate many years of the Magic Music group, largely in charge of the musical path from the Captain’s traditional last two albums, Doc on the Radar Place and Glaciers Cream for Crow. Bassist Tony Maimone was a founding person in Pere Ubu and his very own experimental trio Drumhead, aswell as an adjunct person in bands which range from the Crimson Crayola to THEY COULD BE Giants. (Langford’s fellow Mekon Steve Goulding played out the drums; Langford, Lucas, and Maimone distributed songwriting responsibilities.) On the sole album, documented within a four-day program in August 1993 at Dave Trumfio’s Kingsize Audio Laboratories in Chicago, the Killer Shrews combine up punky sound, nation blues, avant-garde weirdness, and natural country in a manner that recalls all three Shrews’ various other rings without one member’s efforts overshadowing others. Relatively unfortunately, nevertheless, the Killer Shrews had been always designed to be considered a one-shot cooperation and not a continuing project.
