Biography
This really obscure Phoenix band released a late-period psychedelic album in 1971 that, with the standards of self-released LPs of that time period, was several layers above the most common such offering. Generally (but not wholly) instrumental, their Folkstone Prism was an authentically oddball, sometimes goofy, and occasionally inspired mixture of browse music, spaced-out psychedelia, and foolish pop. The incredible dabs of melodica, zither, and particular results by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ken Walker added a cloud of eeriness: “I HAVE NO IDEA” provides keyboards straight from the Chantays’ browse traditional “Pipeline”; “Goodbye Pamela Ann” provides scorching psychedelic electric guitar that appears like a mating from the Electric powered Prunes and Haight-Ashbury, and “Mom of My Kids” provides vocals that appear to be a Lee Hazlewood parody. Kennelmus, certainly, is seen as religious forefathers of kinds to many post-punk Arizona rings — Black Sunlight Ensemble, Close friends of Dean Martinez, and Scenic — which have produced instrumental rock that may work as a quasi-psychedelic desert film soundtrack. Needless to say, it’s doubtful that those rings, or numerous others, were alert to Kennelmus, since their record was released within a pressing of 1000 in 1971, and isn’t even popular among enthusiasts. Kennelmus advanced from the greater standard garage music group the Shi-Reeves, who performed British Invasion addresses and browse music. Ken Walker transformed the name to Kennelmus in 1969 (Kennelmus getting his full initial name), with vocalist/guitarist Bob Narloch started saving Folkstone Prism in past due 1970, by using bassist Tom Gilmore and drummer Mike Shipp. The record was quite definitely the brainchild of Walker, who composed all except one of the music. Three from the four bandmembers proved helpful in a pressing place, making them mostly of the, if not the only real, band of their kind to actually help press their very own recordings. An anomaly of its period (or any various other), Folkstone Prism produced little impact, as well as the band split up across the mid-’70s, even though record was reissued on Compact disc by Sundazed in 1999.
