Ken McIntyre

A versatile player having a thoughtful design who are able to play quite freely, Ken McIntyre hasn’t been a significant name in jazz in spite of his skills. After providing in the armed service and graduating from the Boston Conservatory, he found its way to NY in 1960 and produced a solid impression. He documented two albums for New Jazz that 12 months, including one which he kept his personal against Eric Dolphy. McIntyre also led two now-scarce information for United Performers during 1962-1963 (including one entitled Way WAY TO AVOID IT) but became involved with education, teaching in public areas schools beginning in 1961. He continuing playing on the part-time basis (documenting with Cecil Taylor in 1966). McIntyre led five albums for SteepleChase during 1974-1978, including his definitive arranged Hindsight (which discovers him spotlighting each of his five horns inside a quartet). He also documented with Craig Harris in 1983 and come up with an Eric Dolphy tribute arranged for Serene in 1991, but Ken McIntyre by no means gained the acknowledgement he deserved. In the first ’90s, he used the 1st name of Makanda and in June 2001, he released his 1st documenting in years, entitled A FRESH Starting. Multi-instumentalist and music educator Dr. Makanda Ken McIntyre passed on at age 69 due to a coronary attack on Wed, June 13, 2001, at his house in Harlem, NY .
