Manfila was created right into a jali family members and played balafon and electric guitar as a kid. He became a member of Les Ballets Africains, transferred to Bamako through the ’60s and became a member of the Rail Music group, which highlighted Salif Keita and Mory Kante at that time. He and Keita transferred to Les Ambassadeurs in the first ’70s, beginning a successful collaborative romantic relationship. Both pursued single careers within the ’80s, with Manfila shifting to Paris and documenting in both little, traditional organizations and big dance rings.
