Kaiser Marshall

b. Joseph Marshall, 11 June 1899, Savannah, Georgia, USA, d. 3 January 1948, NEW YORK, NY, USA. While he was still a kid Marshall’s family transferred to Boston, Massachusetts, where he started playing drums, tutored by George L. Rock. In 1923, right now in NY, he became a member of Fletcher Henderson’s music group during its rise to popularity and prominence but still left in 1930 just like Henderson got into his headiest period. In the past due 20s, Marshall produced some landmark recordings with Louis Armstrong’s little studio groups. A good dependable drummer, in the past due 30s and early 40s he discovered regular function, playing and documenting numerous leading figures from the jazz globe including Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Outrageous Bill Davison, Artwork Hodes, Sidney Bechet and Bunk Johnson. Marshall’s function was sufficiently respectable for him to become asked to deputize for Chick Webb when the greater well-known drummer was as well sick to try out all night along with his own band.
