Junior Varsity

With their mix of ’50s teen pop and cheerleader stage presence, Houston-based Junior Varsity could easily supply the soundtrack to any high-school pep rally. Originally comprising Matt Murillo (drums/vocals), Kim Hammond (bass/vocals), DJ Butchie Cordell, and Sean McManus (electric guitar/vocals), Junior Varsity performed the self-described audio of “frat-hop,” because they also distributed a like for beach films and three-chord punk. Several compilation efforts and singles had been released between 1996 and 1998 before Junior Varsity’s 1st full-length, Bam Bam Bam, arrived in 1998. This launch presented the debut of participant Rebecca Whitley, who became a member of following the departure of McManus.
