Julius Baker

Like a flutist of extraordinary skill, Julius Baker distinguished himself in lots of musical tasks: orchestral prinicipal, chamber participant, soloist, instructor, and recording designer. In the second option world he was prolific, showing up on a huge selection of recordings, prompting lots of of his admirers to see that anyone who possessed classical recordings probably possessed many of Baker’s. He performed in the Cleveland Orchestra under Artur Rodzinski, the Columbia Symphony Orchestra under Bruno Walter, and the brand new York Philharmonic under Bernstein, Boulez, and Mehta, producing several recordings with all celebrations. Furthermore, Baker performed in chamber ensembles and with the leading soloists of your day, like Glenn Gould. He also trained in the Juilliard College of Music, Curtis Institute, and Carnegie Mellon College or university, and among his college students had been Paula Robison, Eugenia Zukerman, and Jeffrey Khaner. Baker’ recordings from the Mozart concertos, and the entire flute outputs of J.S. Bach and Handel remain touchstones among connoisseurs from the repertory. And Baker was barely less well known in Intimate and twentieth hundred years repertory: he offered several concerts and produced acclaimed recordings of functions by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, Nielsen, Hindemith, and a clutch of composers modern to him, including Elie Siegmeister, Lennox Berkeley, Robert Muczynski, and countless others. A lot of Baker’s recordings remain on Sony, EMI, Centaur, Titanic, and Vanguard. Julius Baker was created in Cleveland, OH, on Sept 23, 1915. He started flute lessons at nine along with his dad, an excellent amateur participant. Baker’s advanced research took place on the Curtis Institute, where his most significant instructor was William Kincaid. Baker graduated in 1937 and started using the Cleveland Orchestra that same calendar year, keeping on until 1941. More than the next many decades Baker blended orchestral function in with freelancing in chamber and single music, but his orchestral resumé as primary flutist by itself was amazing: Pittsburgh Symphony under Fritz Reiner (1941-1943), Chicago Symphony under Rafael Kubelik (1951-1953), and NY Philharmonic (1965-1983). Furthermore, Baker was energetic during this time period in the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, a recording-only ensemble made by Columbia Information. Baker was also a founding person in the Bach Aria Group, where he performed from 1946-1964. Baker started teaching at Juilliard in 1954 with the Curtis Institute in 1981. Baker continued to be active, especially being a teacher, for some of his staying years. He passed away in Danbury, CT, on August 8, 2003.
