JuJus

Arguably probably the most renowned band to emerge from the Western Michigan garage rock scene from the 1960s, the JuJus formed in Grand Rapids in 1963. Originally composed of bassist Pole Sheppard, saxophonist Maximum Colley, Jr. and drummer Expenses Gorsky–students at Grand Rapids’ Godwin Large School–in 1964 the group recruited vocalist/guitarist Ray Hummel III, a 12 months later expanding to some quintet with the help of ex-Paeans guitarist Rick Stevens. After playing regional hangouts just like the Ponytail and documenting a demo from the Hammel-penned “Runaround,” in 1966 the JuJus–so called honoring Colley’s more youthful brother’s failure to properly pronounce his nickname, “Junior”–authorized to the neighborhood Fenton label to record their debut solitary, “You Treated Me Poor.” The track later surfaced around the first level of the famous Pebbles series, guaranteeing the JuJus an area within the garage area music group pantheon; their follow-up, “Perform YOU REALIZE Me?,” was also put together on the 1st Back from your Grave compilation, further immortalizing their skills. But in middle-1966 Hammel remaining the JuJus to obtain married, immediately after resurfacing within the short-lived Visitors Jams; a following Hammel solo one, the Fenton discharge “Fine Time,” featured support from Colley and Gorsky.
