Boston-based indie rockers Joy presented vocalist/guitarist Matt Savage and guitarist Daniel Madri, who had previously collaborated in Godboy. (On some songs Pleasure also included drummer Matt Dodge and extra guitarist Ariel Rabinovic.) The group’s self-titled 2003 debut for Shrimper nodded towards the lo-fi songwriting of Lou Barlow as well as the Hill Goats, in addition to Led by Voices’ balladry. Released in 2004, Hatred & Grief adopted exactly the same template, while Devil’s Blues in 2005 (once again from Shrimper) extended Joy’s sound to add piano along with other instrumentation.
