Joseph Santley

b. Joseph Mansfield, 10 January 1889, Sodium Lake Town, Utah, USA, d. 8 August 1971, LA, California, USA. His stepfather was stage professional Eugene Santley and Joseph got to the level at age group three and made an appearance on Broadway at nine, billed as ‘America’s Greatest Boy Professional’. He obtained Broadway stardom in 1910 using a Matinee Idol and Judy Forgot. This is implemented in 1914 along with his appearance in Irving Berlin’s Prevent! Look! Pay attention! In 1916 he is at Betty where his co-star was Ivy Sawyer, whom he wedded. He was using a touring business edition of Jerome Kern’s Oh, Boy! In 1929 he co-directed, with Robert Florey, the Marx Brothers’ initial film, The Cocoanuts. Through the 30s and 40s Santley aimed and occasionally co-wrote a string of B-movies including melodramas and musicals. Among the second option, all them significantly low-budget, are Dance Ft, Laughing Irish Eye and Strolling On Air flow (all 1936), She’s Got Everything (1937), Golf swing, Sister, Golf swing (1938), Music IN MY OWN Center, Melody And Moonlight, Dance ON THE Dime and Melody Ranch (all 1940), Sis Hopkins, Rookies On Parade, Puddin’ Mind and Ice-Capades (all 1941), Thumbs Up and Chatterbox (all 1943), Rosie The Riveter, Three Small Sisters and Brazil (all 1944), Earl Carroll Vanities (1945), Make Believe Ballroom (1949) so when You’re Smiling (1950). Hampered by spending budget constraints, non-e of his movies was memorable even though some present glimpses of stars and performers who do better things somewhere else. In the first 50s, Santley once again changed tack, right now going into tv where he became a maker and movie director and was in charge of several popular variety displays.
