Joseph Portes

Dominican-born Joseph Portes aka Un Gato del Merengue (Merengue’s Kitty) started attending singing classes following his family members settled in NYC. Captivated by exotic music and fantasizing about learning to be a well-known Latin vocalist, the young musician joined up with Primitivo Santos’ orchestra prior to going single. With “Agua de Beber,” “Me Siento Prendío,” along with a merengue edition of Juan Gabriel’s “No Me Vuelvo A Enamorar,” Joseph Portes achieved his major objective. In 1998 his determination and skill led him to attain the ACE’s Outstanding Regional Artist Award.
