Joseph “Kaiser” Marshall

Because of his use Fletcher Henderson, Kaiser Marshall was considered probably one of the most influential drummers in jazz from the 1920s and was among the 1st significant big music group drummers. Marshall was raised in Boston and gigged locally including with vocalist Jules Bledsoe and Charlie Dixon. After shifting to NY, he is at Ralph “Shrimp” Jones’ music group in 1923 and spent an extended period with Henderson (from 1924-30), showing up on many information. After departing Henderson in 1930, Marshall continued to be quite energetic and used many rings. He led his Czars of Tranquility in 1931, caused LeRoy Smith, co-led Kaiser and Reynolds’ Bostonians with Ellsworth Reynolds, and subbed in the orchestras of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. Marshall caused a later edition of McKinney’s Natural cotton Pickers, with Leon Englund, going some short-lived organizations, played in European countries with Bobby Martin in 1937, was with Edgar Hayes in 1939 and from the first 1940s on mainly caused Dixieland rings. Among his later on associations were Crazy Bill Davison, Artwork Hodes, Bunk Johnson, Sidney Bechet and Mezz Mezzrow (the second option two welcomed Marshall for some of the Ruler Jazz recordings). Marshall under no circumstances led his personal record day but could be noticed on a number of recordings like a sideman. Meals poisoning triggered his sudden loss of life at age 48.
