John Arthur Lee was an Alabama bluesman who recorded five edges (“Baby Blues,” “Baby DO NOT Move,” “Straight down on the Depot,” “Alabama Boogie,” “Blind’s Blues”) for Government Information in July 1951 in Montgomery, AL. He also documented an record for Rounder Information in the 1970s (which proceeded to go unissued on Compact disc). Lee was created Might 24, 1915, in Lowdnes State, AL. He discovered his distinctive blade slide guitar design from his uncle, Ellie Lee, and spent the 1930s playing jukes and home celebrations before settling in Montgomery in 1945. Federal’s Ralph Bass auditioned him there, and impressed using what he heard, documented the five edges in 1951.
