Biography
Lyricist John Latouche was created November 13, 1917, in Richmond, VA, later on going to the Richmond Academy of Arts and Sciences. While at Columbia School, he produced his composing debut with efforts towards the 1937 revue Fine needles and Pins, 2 yrs afterwards authoring “Ballad for THE GOVERNMENT” for the WPA creation Sing a muslim Supper; the melody was quickly modified by composer Earl Robinson and retitled “Ballad for Us citizens” for make use of in the air broadcast Quest for Happiness, afterwards resurfacing within the 1942 film Blessed to Sing. Within the interim, Latouche have scored his greatest industrial success using the 1940 Broadway premiere of Cabin in the Sky, an all-black musical constructed by Vernon Duke and choreographed by George Balanchine; Ethel Waters presented the production’s most well-known number, “Going for a Possibility on Appreciate.” Latouche also done 1941’s Glaciers Capades, as the pursuing year’s Banjo Eye yielded his “A Nickel to My Name”; in 1943, Cabin in the Sky was modified for the display screen and he also added to the film musical I Dood It. Latouche continuing alternating between your stage (Polonaise, Beggar’s Vacation) as well as the display screen (Dreams ON THE MARKET, Remains to BE OBSERVED) within the years to check out. In 1956, he teamed with Richard Wilbur and Dorothy Parker to create lyrics for Lillian Hellman’s version of Candide, with music by Leonard Bernstein. He passed away that August 7 at age just 38.
